- Begin working on Personal Insight Questions 7,8 7. What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
Things to consider: Think of community as a term that can encompass a group, team or a place — like your high school, hometown or home. You can define community as you see fit, just make sure you talk about your role in that community. Was there a problem that you wanted to fix in your community?
Why were you inspired to act? What did you learn from your effort? How did your actions benefit others, the wider community or both? Did you work alone or with others to initiate change in your community?
8. Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you stand out as a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California?
Things to consider: If there’s anything you want us to know about you, but didn’t find a question or place in the application to tell us, now’s your chance. What have you not shared with us that will highlight a skill, talent, challenge or opportunity that you think will help us know you better?
From your point of view, what do you feel makes you an excellent choice for UC? Don’t be afraid to brag a little.
4. Continue working on CSU Applications
5. Continue researching for your October Scholarships
6. If time, fill out your TRF
10.7.19 What are we doing today?
- If you have a signed Binder Check put it under the tray under the TV. This will be due by tomorrow for full credit. If you were absent, this will be made up on the next regularly scheduled Binder Check on 10.18.19. If you did not turn in your Personal Insight questions from 5,6 they will be due in the tray as well.
- Log on to PowerSchool and get your Q1 grades (class, teacher, number of missing assignments, percentage, and grade. If you have a D or lower, please explain why. This is an assignment and should be done in class.
- After you have done that, continue to work on your CSU applications. Take one section at a time.
- If your CSU app is done, begin researching scholarships for the month of October.
- You will have Tutorials tomorrow but DO NOT need a prepared TRF.
9.30.19 What are we doing today?
- Receive a Binder Check and two TRFs from Mrs. Kavanagh.
- Log on to PowerSchool and get you Q1 grades. Write them in the grade portion of the Binder Check. If you have a "D" or lower in any class, please explain in the comments. Turn in the Binder Check into the tray under the TV.
- Go to this link and take a quick survey docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeqmKP3qtX-mXRL_4sT4X6-0hEImdXnoF55dTkz2ppblRu5ng/viewform?usp=sf_link
- Go to Khan Academy www.khanacademy.org/ find a question from the SAT part to use on your TRF for tomorrow. If you finish early, go ahead and turn it in as well.
- CSU Research --- looking ahead. As the application fees have gone up, I want you to take a look at the newest updates of the CSUs prior to applying. The Freshman Snapshot is information about the freshman class of that institution. They are commonly referred to as FTF (First Time Freshman) . I would like you to choose three CSUs of your choice and record the Freshman Snapshot of that institution on page 28. If you run out of room, go to page 27. The information specifically I am looking for is the following:
- number of applications
- number of applicants admitted (the institution said yes)
- number of acceptances (the student said yes to the school)
- number of enrolled (students who ACTUALLY enrolled in the school)
- average GPA
- average SAT Score
- average ACT score
6. Begin working on Personal Insight Questions 5, 6
5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
Things to consider: A challenge could be personal, or something you have faced in your community or school. Why was the challenge significant to you? This is a good opportunity to talk about any obstacles you’ve faced and what you’ve learned from the experience. Did you have support from someone else or did you handle it alone?
If you’re currently working your way through a challenge, what are you doing now, and does that affect different aspects of your life? For example, ask yourself, “How has my life changed at home, at my school, with my friends or with my family?”
6. Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.
Things to consider: Many students have a passion for one specific academic subject area, something that they just can’t get enough of. If that applies to you, what have you done to further that interest? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had inside and outside the classroom — such as volunteer work, internships, employment, summer programs, participation in student organizations and/or clubs — and what you have gained from your involvement.
Has your interest in the subject influenced you in choosing a major and/or future career? Have you been able to pursue coursework at a higher level in this subject (honors, AP, IB, college or university work)? Are you inspired to pursue this subject further at UC, and how might you do that?
8. Begin looking applying for your October Scholarships.

Financial Aid 101
What’s the difference between Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans? In short, Direct Subsidized Loans have slightly better terms to help out students with financial need.
Need more info? Visit... https://studentaid.ed.gov/
Here’s a quick overview of Direct Subsidized Loans:
○ for the first six months after you leave school (referred to as a grace period*), and
○ during a period of deferment (a postponement of loan payments).
*Note: If you receive a Direct Subsidized Loan that is first disbursed between July 1, 2012, and July 1, 2014, you will be responsible for paying any interest that accrues during your grace period. If you choose not to pay the interest that accrues during your grace period, the interest will be added to your principal balance.
Here’s a quick overview of Direct Unsubsidized Loans:
Need more info? Visit... https://studentaid.ed.gov/
Here’s a quick overview of Direct Subsidized Loans:
- Direct Subsidized Loans are available to undergraduate students with financial need.
- Your school determines the amount you can borrow, and the amount may not exceed your financial need.
- The U.S. Department of Education pays the interest on a Direct Subsidized Loan
○ for the first six months after you leave school (referred to as a grace period*), and

- Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available to undergraduate and graduate students; there is no requirement to demonstrate financial need.
- Your school determines the amount you can borrow based on your cost of attendance and other financial aid you receive.
- You are responsible for paying the interest on a Direct Unsubsidized Loan during all periods.
- If you choose not to pay the interest while you are in school and during grace periods and deferment or forbearance periods, your interest will accrue (accumulate) and be capitalized (that is, your interest will be added to the principal amount of your loan).
